Guidellnes for specification and evaluation of substation automation projects based on IEC 61850 Maheswaran O., Lakshmi A. Kavitha, Malarvizhi R. Larsen & Toubro Limited, India Online published on 12 July, 2012. Abstract Conventional Electric Power Utilities during the expansion of an existing Substation with latest protective relays, normally face problem with interoperability among protective devices IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) supplied by different manufacturers and also in interlacing the Protection with Process and automation. Currently, as an acceptable universal standard IEC61850(1), has been widely practiced by utilities across the world to overcome these problems of interoperability, expandability and to facilitate flexible data communication. It is most widely used by almost all the major electrical utilities for various voltage levels and is in operation for the last five years at India. Due to this there arises a necessity as how to go about while specifying and selection of Substation automation system for suiting the utilities’ requirement. This paper is intended to highlight to end users/EPG contractors to find appropriate solutions for existing Substation as well as evaluating & selecting right SAS products available in the market to overcome the problems faced while implementing IEG 61850 protocol in the Substation.
