Source-Sink Relationship as a Factor for Grain Shrivelling in Triticale*

Abstract

USING data from two separate experiments, source hyphen sink relationship has been shown as a potent decisive factor in shrivelling of triticale kernels. Grain shrivelling index and the characters related to sink varied singnificantly among the genotypes as revealed from the analysis of variance. Reduction in the source caused an apparently lesser dry matter accumulation in the developing grains and increased the shrivelling. Limited sink with the same source, on the other hand, increased dry matter accumulation and improved grain plumpness. Spike lenght and grains per spike were significantly associated with the grain shrivelling index.
