Induced Variations for Polygenic Traits and Effects of Intermating and Mutagen Treatment on Character Association in Wheat

Abstract

Variations in polygenic traits were induced by treating the F₁ seeds with 0.4% EMS solution in some spring wheat crosses and ranges, means and variances of mutagen treated progenies were compared with their normal analogues. The effect of biparental mating and mutagen treatment on character associations was also studied. Ranges and variances increased with the mutagen treatment in most of the cases, suggesting the efficacy of mutagen treatment of F₁ seeds in increasing F₂ variabily. As regards means, it was either lower or unatered or higher in treated F₂ populations. The character associations among grain yield and quality traits altered in direction or magnitude or both due to intermating/or mutagen treatment or both. In some cases the direction was altered in desirable manner. To break undesirable linkages between desirable traits biparental mating or mutagen treatment/or both are suggested.
