Dystocia due to Lateral deviation of Foetal head and its Emergency management in a Crossbred cattle

Abstract

Dystocia due to lateral deviation of head and neck is one of the commonest types of ruminant dystocia. One such emergency case of 4 year old Karan Fries cross bred cow was reported and successfully managed. Cow was straining and showing symptoms of labor pain and respiratory distress. Cervix was fully dilated and birth passage was dry. Foetus was dead and in anterior presentation, dorso-sacral position with extreme left deviation of head and neck. When attempts made by mutation and extraction failed to expel out the foetus, immediate decision was taken to perform caesarean operation so as to save the life and future fertility of cow. Caesarean section was performed by ventral paramedian approach using standard procedure. Dead calf was delivered. Cow was provided proper post operative care and management and she conceived after 6 months of the operation.
