Summary

Analysis of blood samples of 100 Kanni goats from the breeding tract areas of three districts in Tamil Nadu, India exhibited haemoglobin 8.45±0.03 g/dl, packed cell volume 26.15±0.18%, total erythrocyte count 7.59±0.03 millions/cmm, white blood cell count 7104.32±53.76/cmm, neutrophils 33.90±0.26%, lymphocytes 64.60±0.27% and eosinophils 1.53±0.14%. Serum values were total protein (g/dl), albumin (g/dl)), globulin (g/dl), blood glucose (mg/dl), cholesterol (mg/dl), calcium (mg/dl) and phosphorus (mg/dl) were 6.70±0.02, 3.68±0.01, 3.04±0.03, 47.00±0.53, 59.50±1.30, 7.60±0.05 and 3.58± 0.02, respectively. Significant variation in the white blood cell count was noticed between Kanni goats of less than and more than one year groups. In male goats, significant variation was reported in the calcium content between less than and more than one-year-old animals. Male animals had higher values of haemoglobin, PCV, RBC, WBC counts, total protein and albumin than female goats.
