The cows have been given position as Kamdhenu in Hindu mythological literature, which evolved during Samudra manthan. Also Gautam Rushi had Kamdhenu who fulfill the all the requirement of day to day need. The ayurvedic preparations or medicines of cow origin such as milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung are mostly known as ‘Panchgavya’. The medicinal formulations of Panchgavya have not been validated as widely as other ayurvedic medicines in the advanced scientific community. The immunomodulatory effects of Indian cow urine, ghee and other material is still a virgin field to explore scientifically. However, several ethnoveterinary aspects and old traditional approaches support the Panchgavya system efficacy. Here are some of my observations on several clinical cases in Veterinary Practice.

Debility in orphan hyena cub (Hyaena hyaena)

One orphan debilitated hyena (Hyaena hyaena) cub age of around five to seven days was rescued and kept in the zoo. We decided to manage the cub with cow milk by bottle feeding (Fig 1). About 250 ml of fresh cow milk was given to the cub for four times a day with all due aseptic precaution of bottle feeding hygiene. The cub adjusted himself with the cow milk and improved better and survived. The vigor, strength and vitality of cub maintain better, later on after a month the cub started feeding bread, cow milk and vitamin supplements with Verol drops, a multi vitamins with irons (Ranbaxy Ltd., Mumbai). The above study suggests managing the orphan baby with cow milk replacement therapy.

Eczema in hanuman langur (Presbytis entellus)

From one of the Jain Ashram, a hanuman langur also known as common langur (Presbytis entellus) was brought to the center with chronic eczema on the lateral aspect of abdomen. The animal was scratching, itching and alopecia was observed clinically. The moist eczema was diagnosed. The owner of langur requested us not to use any chemical compound on the affected area of dermatitis on religious background, so we opted on alternative therapy and started the therapy using cow urine as dressing fluid to wash the affected area. The affected area then cleaned with cotton and equal volume of an ash of dried cow dung cake mixed with cow ghee was applied making a paste daily twice a day for five days. To our wonder the affected area was healed with new skin and necrosed skin were slough off with granulations of new tissues, the exudates were dried off. The eczema was reduced and cured in fortnight.
