Why cowpathy again in 21st century


Milk of cow is most common source of all the essential nutrients and is consumed throughout the world. In India cow rearing is back bone of the rural economy. The increased use of chemicals in agriculture and animal husbandry practices has resulted in green and white revolution. However, we are paying a heavy price for the revolutions in the form of increased disease incidences caused by the residues of harmful chemicals. Cross-breeding policies, however, lead to increased milk production but the cost of production increased many folds because of increased disease susceptibility, indicating cross breeding program as a failure. If we have a close look, in our country we have a large galaxy of milch, draught and dual purpose breeds of cow. Even if we peep in the past history of the country many agricultural operations, transport, marriages etc. were dependent on the animal husbandry sector particularly on the cows and bullocks. The products from cow were used properly either as medicines or as biofertilizers/biopesticides in agricultural operations. Milk, ghee, dahi, urine and dung together are known as ‘Panchgavya’ (Cowpathy) in Ayurveda and have been found to cure many ailments of human beings and animals. However, due to dominancy of western culture on our minds, our precious ancient treasure of cowpathy has not got the due attention. WHO has predicted that the microorganisms are becoming resistant to most of the antibiotics and by 2020 antibiotics (so called wonder drug of the 20th century) will loss their effectiveness and be no more in use to cure diseases in man and animals. Most of the antibiotics are bacteriostatic in nature and as such they do not kill the bacteria, rather they suppress their growth and the bacteria have to be killed by the body's defense mechanisms named as phagocytic system through macrophages. WHO has also advised to its all member countries to explore and use the traditional wisdom for the health management. Due to these facts (harmful chemical residues and antibiotic resistance) there is a race in the healthcare personnel/scientists throughout the world to find suitable and sustainable methods of treating the ailments. Now, the attention of the international scientific forum has been diverted towards the alternative therapies like Ayurveda, Chinese herbal, Japanese herbal therapies, homeopathy etc.

In the polluted environmental conditions, where we have pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins in each and every food items, the body's defense mechanism is being down regulated day by day leading to increased susceptibility, recurrent infections and increased incidence of cancer or immune mediated diseases. In this situation, cowpathy is a ray of hope to control infections by maintaining the immune status of an individual. The cow urine has been given two US patents for its bio-enhancer properties specially for early cure of tuberculosis and cancer in human beings. Other studies also revealed the immunomodulatory properties of indigenous cow urine. Interestingly, such properties could not be detected in urine of exotic, cross bred cows or other animals. Besides, cow urine is said to be a very good insect repellents when mixed with certain herbs. There are numerous uses of cow urine for various human ailments like, cancer, osteoarthritis, allergies, kidney failures, skin diseases, healing of wounds, etc. If we consider all these things in a positive way we find that the indigenous cows are comparatively much more useful than any other milch animal as they not only provide the milk but also protect our health, through cowpathy and sustain the agriculture through dung manure and bullocks. Need of hour is another revolution through extensive research on cowpathy for its scientific validation and a wider popularity. Many institutes and NGOs are working on different products of cowpathy and have got very encouraging results.

This is the right time to launch an international platform where we can share and disseminate the valuable information about the validation experiments of medicinal cow products and on the disease, health and managemental aspects of the cow. Therefore, in an effort to the same cause "International Journal of Cow Science" is being launched. The IJCS will provide up-to-date information on recent researches, knowledge from ancient resources, experiences from the readers regarding the use of cow and cow products. This journal will be useful in getting the recognition to Indian cow and cow products at international level thus bringing popularity to the mother cow and its products at international level. Hope the journal will benefit the life on earth either directly or indirectly.
