Seminar on:
“E-Publishing & Global Promotion of Indian Publications”
on
1st July, 2006, Auditorium, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Vihar Lake, Mumbai

Inaugural address by Dr. Vijay Kumar,
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

I thank the organizers for inviting me in the Seminar. I think more importance should be given on the theme, i.e., “E-Publishing & Global Promotion of Indian Publications”. When we talk about online Indian Journals, we have seen in India, these are very few Indian Journals.

I remember in BARC two years back, not only our researcher, but our own colleagues for Online Science. Now it has become habit to ask for online.

All have to be sensitized to get the theme of online journal, when we think of online journals, we think of Indian Journals. A lot is to be done in India in this regards. I think Indianjournals.com will definitely do the needful to promote the Indian Journals. I congratulate the team to take this initiative. I think this is the first kind of seminar in this field.

When we talk about the biodata of a person, we talk about the person with papers associated in International journals and we look down upon the person who writes in Indian Journals. I feel this should be stopped. India has produced high quality journals like Current Science, Sankhya and others. Even for the journals published in other countries, we find online journals are of high quality. This type of seminar is very commendable. I hope this type of vision will definitely bring some changes in the Indian Publishing context.

All the Indian Journals should be put to the NGOs. There should be visibility and slowly we should develop the mindset and I think this will happen some day.

I request Mr. Gurwara to take such an initiative. When we talk about Indian Journals, we talk about the Open Access journals. How will be the commercial viability? This is the subject, which needs a lot of debate. It will take so many discussions to get some extent of visibility.

So I feel this is a very good initiative and I wish greater success to the team!

Thank you
