“E-Publishing & Global Promotion of Indian Publications”
on
1st July, 2006, Auditorium, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Vihar Lake, Mumbai
Speech by Ms. Sudha Ganpati,

We have rather interesting combination of Publisher, Librarian and Facilitator among us here today. I am a Publisher. So I was also prepared to share my point of view on this day. I’ll try and cover the points jotted down. There is lot of pressure on academicians to publish. For example, JICS is the oldest journal in Agriculture in Asia, but to publish articles in the journal there is lot of pressure on the publisher. Once, about two years back one scientist came to us and said “I need to publish an article on Seed Genetics in a journal”. After a glance I said no and then a Letter of Rejection went to him.
We have seen many publications with a good start but due to lack of good content they perish. Certain journals with good quality cannot maintain the timeliness. Now, why we delay? Editors delay because of lot of pressure and responsibility. If we do not pass, then there becomes lack of timeliness and in Advisory capacity passing an article is very crucial job. We cannot compare ourselves with International journals. In quality wise also what Dr. Vijai Kumar and Dr. Ranade said that we see quality of Indian Journals as those of the International Journals, I do not agree as the quality of the Indian Journals cannot be compared at all! In case of International Journals, they try to pitch, they try to sell. They are perfect in all Publication aspects. We receive a lot of articles from the Middle East -Turkey, Hong Kong, Singapore. Why do not we think India to become a Regional Hub? This is just a suggestion. Then e-publication can never take over our Print Copies. There are groups of people who prefer Print publication. Reading things online is great, when we access the computer and internet. But computer is not available every time and is a costly affair. That is why we need Print Copies.
While accessing IndianJournals.com, I found there is only one Social Science Journal so when will you be approaching us? Now when we talk about Global Promotion, we should not think of Global Promotion actually. First promote the journals in India, then think of Global Promotion. Though, Internet is doing the job.
Thanks
Sudha Ganpati
