Effects of Urbanization on Environment in India Since 1991

This paper has tried to examine effects of urbanization on CO₂ emissions in India. Annual time series data over the period of 1978–79 to 2014–15 are used. ARDL bound testing approach is used to check the existence of co-integration relationship among CO₂, RGDPC and URBAN. In short run, no causal relationship is found among the variables. But, negative relationship is found between urbanization and CO₂ emissions in long run. The findings of this paper suggests policy makers to formulate appropriate policy for long term urban planning to reduce CO₂ emissions.
