Abstract

The improved silvi-herbage system developed by introd ucing Setaria anceps and Robinia pseudoacacia in combination in the humid for sub-tropical natural grassland has been found viable for providing higher tonnage and increased availability of green herbage. This herbage also had significantly high CP, minerals and lower levels of cell wall components. Feeding of this herbage to iactating cows resulted in higher digestibility of nutrients and higher intake of DCP and TDN, besides supporting two fold carrying capacity of milch cows per hactare as compared to that of the natural grassland. However, for achieving optimum production levels, this herbage was still inadequate and needed the supplementation of concentrate mixture in the diet.
