Effect of Saponins on Urea Ammoniation of Wheat Straw
Abstract
Wheat straw treated with 4% urea at 50% moisture was mixed with different levels of saponins from Mahua (Bassia latifolia) seed cake extract (containing saponins) to assess the fixation of free ammonia. Urea ammoniation of wheat straw increased the CP content without significantly affecting the fiber components. Addition of saponins ranging from 0 to 400mg/100 g wheat straw through mahua seed cake extract had no beneficial effect in trapping the free ammonia and on the fiber constituents.
