The inheritance of cigar-shaped panicle, plant height and grain size was studied in a cross between N 22, an early maturing and medium grain variety from Uttar Pradesh (India), and Pachhaiperumal × H 8 club mutant, an introduction from Ceylon. Normal panicle habit was controlled by 2 pairs of dominant genes (N1 and N2); a third recessive gene c controlled the cigar-shaped panicle. This gene at c locus was found to be epistatic to N2. Plant height (tallness) was controlled by 2 pairs of dominant genes (T1 and T2); a third recessive gene c was epistatic to T2 only making such genotypes short. Occurrence of long grains in a cross between a medium and a short grain variety is reported for the first time. Four pairs of genes were found to control grain size.
