Abstract

Transformer failure leading to its explosion and consequential fire has been occurring periodically causing catastrophic effects to users and the neighbourhood environment. Over the years, many insightful studies have been undertaken to improve the reliability of the transformers & minimise the ‘outburst’ of the transformers. Transformer explosions have been on the decrease thanks to the various safety measures evolved over the time. This paper briefly looks at the role of the transformer tank design in prevention of the fire & the country's experience in fire system protection devices with electrical differential relays. While efforts are on to curtail the root cause of the explosion and fire in transformers, it concludes the absolute necessity for the fire prevention system and agrees totally with the CEA regulation to mandate fire prevention systems even for medium power rated transformers.
