Assistant Professor,
Of all environmental degradation problems facing the Himalaya are its various forms and results, the forest depletion has been most acute and attained the most dangerous level in the Himalayan region. In past few decades the rapid growth of population and expectation have led to the increased use of forest to such an extent that the forest in many places have disappeared. The ecological and hydrological consequences of deforestation are the present conditions of large-scale aridification and even desertification. The forest cover has already depleted in the Himalayan region due to forest fire, which is not an independent force in nature, being one of the major factors which can affect every aspect of forest ecology and contribute towards the disappearance of forests. The present paper clearly indicated the major fire episodes and impact on deforestation.
