Status and economic outlooks of sustainable tourism industry in Bhutan

Abstract

Sustainable development fee is the key source of revenue from tourists. It has found that tourism is a growing industry in Bhutan. It is the second largest source of foreign currency generator after hydroelectricity. The paper discussed the status and economic outlooks of the sustainable tourism industry in Bhutan. Number of tourist visits had been rising since 1995 and declined after 2019 due to the corona pandemic. Highest number of tourists have arrived in Bhutan from South Asian countries. Bhutan is a popular destination for travellers throughout the year, but autumn and spring are the best seasons. The most popular visitor sites in Bhutan are Tashichho Dzong, Punakha Dzong, and Taktsang Goemba. Cultural adventure, natural, spiritual and wellness sites are the attractions among the travellers. Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Bumthang and Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhags are popular among tourists. Bhutan has beautiful natural mountain lakes and glacial lakes. Many lakes are sacred, most often connected to the lives of Buddhist saints. Rivers of Bhutan are popular for rafting and kayaking activities. Foreign exchange earnings through tourist arrivals have increased continuously since 2004. It was declined in 2020–2021 due the corona pandemic. The Department of Tourism is the core organisation for development of the tourism industry. There are challenges before the tourism industry. Therefore, the Government should implement tourism policies for development of tourist sites and comfortability of the tourists.
