The unipolar moment is proving to be ephemeral and economic globalisation is indeed having a decentralising effect. It is leading to the emergence of various political and economic poles around which regional blocs are forming and challenging US-European supremacy. Instability, exacerbated by diverse forms of extremist militancy and by heavy handed Anglo-American attempts to retain preponderance, will remain the watchword.
