The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri range, offer numerous benefits to Maharashtra state. The Western Ghats are one of the world's eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity. They are home to a vast array of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the region. This rich biodiversity supports various ecological functions and play a crucial role in regulating the climate of Maharashtra. The forests provide resources like medicinal herbs, fuelwood, and timber, supporting local communities. The Western Ghats are indeed a treasure trove of natural wealth and play a vital role in sustaining the ecological and economic health of Maharashtra. The Western Ghats also offer immense potential for Pumped Storage Hydro projects(PSP). These projects, which are crucial for energy storage and grid stability, often require large tracts of land and water resources, typically located in ecologically sensitive areas like the Sahyadri ranges. The development of PSP can be significantly impacted by laws such as wildlife Proteaction Act. These laws, such as the Wildlife Protection Act, aim to protect natural habitats and species, which can restrict where and how such schemes are built. For instance, the construction of reservoirs and other infrastructure may be limited or require extensive environmental assessments to ensure minimal disruption to local ecosystems. Additionally, developers often need to implement mitigation measures to protect wildlife, which can increase project costs and timelines. Balancing energy development with environmental conservation is crucial for sustainable progress.
Moreover, the Maharashtra Government has been proactive in balancing development with environmental conservation. The state has earmarked number of sites for PSP development, but each project must comply with stringent environmental guidelines to minimize ecological disruption. This includes measures like habitat restoration, wildlife corridors, and continuous monitoring of environmental parameters.
The presence of wildlife area poses certain challenges to the development of some PSPs in Maharashtra. Also, it is to be ensured that these projects are sustainable and environmentally responsible. This balance is crucial for the long-term success of both energy infrastructure and wildlife conservation in the region.
The paper discusses benefits of Western Ghats, Environmental related some important regulatory provisions, issues in the development of PSPs in wildlife and forest region of Western Ghats, Maharashtra state & mitigation measures to reduce environmental impact of PSP.
