Abstract

An increase in population and industrialization has been causing extension of cities and hence huge amount municipal waste generation (MSW) and disposal problems. Poor disposal facilities of MSW have been causing air pollution due to open dumping, surface water pollution in the form of surface runoff in rainy season and groundwater contamination due to leaching from waste disposal sites. Improper landfilling not only contaminating the groundwater quality but also damaging the land.

In this paper, municipal solid waste generation, composition, and sources responsible for municipal wastes generation in the Lucknow city, Uttar Pradesh, India has been explained. The paper highlights the collection, segregation, and different types of transportation systems for carrying MSW in the Lucknow city. Waste collection efficiency and recycling rate are the lowest in Lucknow city compared to other cities in India. Landfilling is the highest in the Lucknow city. Wast to energy conversion is almost nil in this city. MSW influences the geotechnical properties soil like specific gravity, liquid limit, plastic limit, compaction characteristics and permeability. Variations in water quality parameters such pH, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, total alkalinity, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and were observed between controlled and landfilled site. Many researches have carried out studies on liners for the control of leachate are also explained in this paper.
