Energy is an important input in all sectors of country's economy. Every sector of the national economy-agriculture, industry, transport, commercial and domestic needs energy. It is paramount importance to develop the availability of electrical power before attempting for the growth of other sectors. The objectives of the study are to identify the present power supply position of India, and to identify the reasons why wind power is more sustainable than other sources. It was identified that the peak power requirement is increasing at the rate of around 8% annually in the State. To meet the energy deficit and to have energy independence, renewable energy sector in India has emerged as a significant player in the grid connected power generation capacity. Amongst them, the need and significance of wind energy is recognized that has the advantage of maturity, cost competitiveness and modularity. It was concluded that the positive benefits of the wind mills to the dispersed community would make the wind energy socially sustainable. When wind power is fully harnessed as efficiently as possible, it will continue on for future generations as a reliable energy source.
