A set of 31 blackgram genotypes consisting of released varieties, advanced breeding lines and germplasm accessions of land races was analyzed for genetic diversity in terms of polymorphism displayed at 38 SSR loci. These genotypes were also scored for recommended distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) features. Relatedness among the genotypes was assessed through UPGMA dendrograms. There was a significant correlation between the rank order attributed to the test genotypes based on SSR polymorphism and DUS scoring. Principal component analysis revealed seven DUS features relating to pigmentation of plant parts in three principal components accounting for about half of the variability among the test genotypes. Principal coordinate analysis based on both SSR and DUS features could resolve differences unresolved in SSR or DUS dendrograms. Graphical genotyping revealed good association between some DUS traits like foliage color with SSR markers CEDG043 and of leaf vein color, petiole color, seed color and seed luster with SSR marker CEDG 180. The results suggested a need for a relook at DUS features to distinguish blackgram varieties and identification of SSR markers linked to these features for precise and quick identification of blackgram cultivars.
