Community Perception on Child Laborers: A Case of Mysore City, India

The problem of child labour in India is a kind of social threatening and casuding damage to very fabrics of a social environment. It has remained both an economic and a social problem since a long time in India. According to the latest report more than 100 million children below the age of 14 years are toiling in different corners of India. Since different culture and society defines childhood in different manner Government polices and programmes should be culturally and geographically specific. Recent studies have reveled that there are many reasons other than economic compulsion to perpetuate childlabour. In this paper here is an attempt to examine the different factors for the causes of child labour problem emphasizing, on the factors other than poverty at grass root level in Mysore city (Karnataka India) and community perceptions about child labour and Govt. efforts to eradicate this problem. Also this paper adding the general knowledge base of how community evaluates the risk associated with the job and classifies the ages as being appropriate to each type of the work.
