Association of TCF7L2 Polymorphisms with Measure of Obesity in Type 2 Diabetes Cases and Normoglycemic Controls from Rural, Coastal Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

In India diabetes is skyrocketing, as per 2011 prevalence rates India harbours nearly 62.4 million people with Type 2 Diabetes and are expected to reach 100 million by the year 2030. An Indian with a BMI of 23 has the same amount of body fat as a Caucasian with a BMI of 25. Thus the BMI threshold that serves as a warning sign for developing diseases like type 2 diabetes is much lower in Indians. TCF7L2 is the best candidate gene in the history of diabetes genetics. The present study is aimed to measure the linear relationship between TCF7L2 infamous SNPs and measures of obesity, which are the risk factors for T2D. The study could not find any association of TCF7L2 SNPs with BMI and WHR.
