The total lipid, phospholipids and cholesterol contents in the muscles of seven marine fishes viz., Filimanus heptadactyla, Decapterus russelli, Amblygaster leiogaster, Coilia dussumieri, Priacanthus hamrur, Johnius sp. and Harpadon nehereus were analysed. Significant (p<0.05) variations in the lipid content was observed between the fishes with the highest value in A. leiogaster and lowest value in Johnius sp. and H. nehereus. Based on the total lipid contents fishes were classified as high fat fish (A. leiogaster), low fat fishes (F. heptadactyla and P. hamrur) and lean fishes (C. dussumerrie, D. russelli, H. nehereus and Johnius sp.). Overall, the study showed that the fishes were a good source of essential lipid with nutritional values
