Abstract

The present study was conducted on secondary data on population, food grain production, area and yield from the year 1950–51 to 2017–18 in India. The data was collected from the Agricultural Statistics at a Glance (2018), Government of India, from the newspaper The Hindu (2020) and from the research websites. The present study measured the trends in area, production, yield of total food grain production, total population of India, growth rate of area, production and yield of total food grain production in India in different periods. The growth rate of total population in India in different periods was also measured. The per person per day availability (in kg) of total food grain production and its trends and growth rate in different periods was estimated. The area under total food grain crops slightly increased from 1950–51 to 1990–91 and was almost constant from 1990–91 to 2017–18. The total food grain production increased steadily from 1950–51 to 2017. The yield increased at a slow pace from 1950–51 to 1978–79 as compared to the period from 1978–79 to 2017–18, where it increased at a faster rate. The total population steadily increased from 1950–51 to 2017–18. The per person per day availability of the total food grain production increased overall from 1950–51 to 2017–18 except for fewer years. The study clearly indicated that the production increased at a faster rate as compared to the population
