Abstract

Nutritional knowledge plays an important role in the prevention and cure of certain diseases. Hence, the present study was carried out to determine the knowledge, attitude and dietary practices of hypertensive patients with special reference to DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet. DASH diet comprised of fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products. A structured questionnaire was used for the collection of data from 100 hypertensive subjects who hailed from highly educated class of the society (college lecturers), who were presumed to have an updated knowledge on nutrition in relation to hypertension. The respondents were assessed for their knowledge and practices related to nutrition, which indicated that their knowledge on nutrition was updated but their knowledge on DASH diet was poor. Also, their dietary practice was not consistent with their knowledge and attitude on nutrition
