Effect of Applied Nitrogen on Photosynthesis and Yield Parameters of Various Rice Cultivars

Abstract

A field study was conducted at the Experimental Farm of AMU, Aligarh (UP), India on five rice cultivars namely IR-8, Ratna, Pallavi, Swarnaprabhprabha and Pusa-33 to assess the effect of nitrogen on photosynthesis and yield parameters of rice. Leaf area index, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, canopy photosynthesis, total dry matter were determined at 30 and 50 days after planting (DAP) and at flowering stages. The panicle number, grain panicle-1 and grain yield were determined at harvest. At 100 kg N ha−1 the leaf area index, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, canopy photosynthesis, total dry matter, number of panicles, grain panicle-1 and grain yield showed significant increase over control by 46.2, 20.5, 31.1, 36.8, 86.0, 36.8, 29.0, 96.5 and 12.7%, respectively.
