Abstract

The studies on nature and extent of most prevalent post harvest storage diseases in tulip bulbs and gladiolus corms in Kashmir revealed brown rot and blue green rot, caused by Fusarium spp. and Penicillium spp., respectively, to be the major diseases on tulip and gladiolus. The mean incidence of Fusarium rot was 50.05 and 45.35% on gladiolus and tulip, respectively, whereas Penicillium rot incidence was 28.95 and 37.75%. Both the rots progressed during storage period of 4 months under ambient conditions. The evaluation of various storage containers as a management strategy for storage diseases reveled that nylon mesh bags, cotton cloth bags and wicker woven baskets significantly restricted storage rots in comparison to control (no container). Nylon mesh bags gave maximum reduction of 52.74 and 44.08% in gladiolus and tulip rots, respectively. Wicker woven and cotton cloth containers exhibited a disease control of 36.21 and 28.33% in tulip, and 47.91 and 39.68% in gladiolus, respectively.
