Abstract

This article explores the pattern and growth of fertilizers consumption in India over the past three decades (1980 – 81 to 2009 – 2010). The country has emerged not only the third largest users of fertilizers but also server as an example for the development world as to what can be achieved through use of improved agricultural practices. About 50% of the production of agriculture crops can be attributed to fertilizer application. Fertilizer consumption is one of the important elements of the agricultural growth strategy. Consumption of fertilizer in India has been growing vigorously. The study utilizes the secondary data which was collected from the published statistical reports. Future trends on fertilizer consumption expected an appreciable growth in India. For this study it could be compiled that agricultural production has increased considerably, with the application of modern input mix viz., fertilizers, high yielding varieties of seeds, better irrigation facilities credit facilities etc. fertilizer has played a significant role in enhancing agriculture, production and productivity.
