The higher education sector of every nation is responsible for its economic and social growth. However, one of the many differences between a developed country and a developing country is its state of affairs in the education sector, and its readiness for ICT integration. India, like any other developing nation now has accepted the important role played by ICT in the Higher Education Sector. The Government of India is now credited with successfully launching a massive ICT project in the Higher education sector, targeting Science & Engineering students. However, the real brains behind this success story are the immensely talented academicians from the seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This case, studies the origin and the current state of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) project. Currently, Phase I of the Programme has been completed and Phase II & Phase III are in action. The case shows how free access to quality enhanced & technology enabled web and video content in the Engineering & Science subjects has many takers in the form of students, faculty members & working professionals from urban & rural parts of India, as well as from 140 different nations.
