Abstract

Maukhari is not a new term to the historians, as it has been known from the early times. The earliest evidence of the term, ‘Maukhari’ comes from a caly seal found from Gayal1 with the legend Mokhalinām, edited by General Alexander Cunningham.2 It is inscribed in the Maurya Brahmi Characters, which is equivalent of the Sanskrit word Maukharinām. It has been suggested that the word must have been derived from Mukhara, which signifies of the Maukharis.
