Abstract

The Tiger's Daughter (1971), Wife (1975) and Darkness (1985) mark distinct phases in Mukherjee's life and career, There is a definite shift in Mukherjee's artistic obsession, from the ‘aloofness of expatriation’.i To be precise, Wife belongs to the period of transition from the ‘expatriate’ phase to the ‘immigrant’ phase in Mukherjee's own life. In Wife the novelist shows a common dream of some third world immigrants, who are obsessive of American glitziness and opportunities and are therefore, agile to ‘settle’ in the New World.
