Abstract

Now-a-days most Mathematics textbooks & teachers uses the traditional ways of step by step long multiplication process. This traditional method requires memorization of the basic multiplication facts and need more time. By the time if children make any mistake in between the process of traditional multiplication, that will spoil their whole work and can't easily identify the error. This often leads to loss of interest, self-confidence and self-esteem. Securing interest and attention is the primary pre-requisite for effective teaching-learning process. Thus the researcher conducted a study by introducing a new method for doing multiplication which aims to lessen children's traditional pain and frustration in learning the multiplication successfully. For this purpose two equivalent groups were selected (experimental and control group) and each group comprises of 45 primary school students. The paper strip multiplication treatment lasted for three weeks for the experimental group while the control group was taught through traditional (existing) style of multiplication. After the successful completion of training programme, it was notified that the new algorithm of multiplication (paper strip multiplication) is significantly more effective than traditional (existing) multiplication method.
