Effective Defect Detection and Reporting

One of the most important things a tester does is to write “Defect Report” or “Bug Report”. A defect report is a technical document which describes the failure mode in AUT (Application under Test). How well a tester creates a bug report directly affects how likely the programmer is to fix it. Reporting a bug is nothing but a skill. Why do some testers get much better response from development team than others? Part of the answer lies in their defect report. The objective is not to write the perfect defect report, but to write an effective defect report that conveys the proper message, gets the job done and simplifies the process for everyone. It is worth the effort to learn how to write effective bug reports. This paper will cover “Standards and Techniques” to identify defect prone modules in Application under Test and tactics that can be applied to make a Bug Report effective.
