Gurmat sangeet is one of the rarest ancient traditions of music which has been transferred to the next generation in its unaltered form. Initiated from the earliest spiritual guru ‘Guru Nanak Dev Ji’, the tradition has been consistently followed by the successors of the thesikh religion gurus. The aim of the Gurmatsangeet is to procurespiritual knowledge which provides liberation and serenity toa person through ‘shabda’. It devolves a person to a mode of equilibrium where no desire of the mundane world could have any bearings on him. Continuous practice of the ‘shabda kirtan’can lead the person to the ‘Naaddhun’. In the entire process, the sublunary-mind gets revamped into an illuminated one and thus become free. “Musical system of Gurbani rejected the medieval raga ragini classi!cation system and classi!ed all the ragas in a distinct scientic approach called ‘raga(u)’(SINGH B. S., 2006).” The musical system of Gurbani not only comprehends with raga-rasa and bhava, but also embraces the properties of ‘raga dhyana’. This study primarilyaims towards studying the brief properties of the ragas mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
