Abstract

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is one of the most significant global events aimed at raising awareness about critical environmental issues. The present study seeks to evaluate the themes of World Environment Day from its inception in 1974 to 2024, focusing on how these themes address specific environmental concerns and promote sustainable actions. Based on the secondary sources, the paper presents a historical analysis of the themes and categorizing them into five distinct periods such as A Decade of Environmental Awareness and Action (1974 to 1989), Expanding Sustainable Development and Equity (1990 to 1999), The Rise of Climate Change and Pollution Concerns (2000 to 2009), Pollution, Biodiversity and the Green Economy (2010 to 2019) and Ecosystem Restoration and Addressing the Plastic Crisis (2020 to 2024). The paper explores how the evolution of these themes reflects shifting global environmental priorities, emerging challenges and the growing recognition of the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems. By analysing the themes across decades, the study assesses their impact on policy, public awareness and global environmental movements. Ultimately, it offers insights into how environmental concerns have progressed in response to urgent issues such as climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. In essence, the World Environment Day continues to serve as a vital platform in mobilizing the global community towards a sustainable future.
