Abstract

Subjugation and oppression encompass the systematic domination and mistreatment of individuals or groups based on factors such as race, gender, religion, or social class. Those who are subjugated and oppressed face discriminatory practices, limited rights, and barriers to social, economic, and political participation. They experience marginalization, exclusion, and denial of basic freedoms, perpetuating cycles of disadvantage and inequality. Subjugation and oppression manifest through various forms of discrimination, prejudice, and systemic barriers that hinder individuals’ agency and restrict their ability to fully realize their potential. In this context contemporary literature can play a significant and constructive role against subjugation and oppression. The present paper explores the constructive role of contemporary literature in overcoming subjugation and oppression. The paper introduces the theme of subjugation and oppression precisely; explain forms of subjugation and oppression prevailing in Indian society and the importance of addressing subjugation and oppression Besides, paper also highlights some literary works in which scholars have raised their voice against this crucial issue and also reveals the literary techniques used by scholars in their literary writings to expose the issues related subjugation and oppression. Therefore, by examining various literary works, the study delves into how literature serves as a catalyst for challenging oppressive systems, empowering individuals, and fostering social change. This paper contributes to an understanding of the power of literature in overcoming subjugation and oppression, advocating for the recognition of literature as a vital tool for empowerment and societal transformation.
