Abstract

Feminism in literature has long been a tool for reimagining the roles of women in both historical and mythological narratives. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Palace of Illusions (2008) is a powerful feminist retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata, offering a fresh perspective by narrating the story from Draupadi’s point of view. The novel challenges traditional portrayals of Draupadi as a submissive wife and instead presents her as an independent, intelligent, and strong-willed woman.Through Draupadi’s voice, The Palace of Illusions questions gender roles, power dynamics, and the impact of male-centric narratives on women’s identities. This paper explores the feminist themes in The Palace of Illusions, focusing on Draupadi’s agency, her struggles with societal expectations, and the ways in which she redefines power and autonomy. It also examines how Divakaruni’s retelling compares to the original Mahabharata and evaluates the novel’s reception in the context of feminist literature.
