In the present paper D.H.Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover is studied critically with a view to examine the extramarital relationship between the two main characters. Though morality is certainly relative inasmuch as the ethical values vary in different periods and in different societies, there are some universal values which are relevant to the whole humanity in all times. Lawrence described sexual relationships explicitly to emphasize the importance of fulfilment of physical desires of the individual. Still, society has laid down a code of conduct to ensure happy and peaceful existence for all. Consequently, all the characters involved in such relation suffer intensely. The main proposition is that illicit relationships outside marriage do not result in happiness of the individual and welfare of the society as a whole and, thus, should be avoided.
