India and Pakistan are two major countries of South Asia. They emerged on the world map as independent states as a result of partition of the Indian sub-continent. India-Pakistan relations have been mainly a story of conflict and discord, mutual distrust and suspicion. If the recent history of relations between India and Pakistan prove anything, it is this in international politics the measures that are most necessary often also the most difficult to take. Throughout the history, there have been some well-accepted tools to defuse hostilities among them and bring peace. However, with the changing dimensions of development and the application of modern techniques, the international community has seen modern way of setting disputes between nations. That is where Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in general and Military Confidence Building Measures in particular have played significant role in bringing peace among India-Pakistan relations. Its importance in defusing tension and hostility and establishing an atmosphere of peace and cooperation between India and Pakistan became more relevant in the post cold war world order. In this context this paper focuses on the need for Military CBMs for normalizing Indo-Pak relations.
