Abstract

With changing times, women started working outside with the aim of becoming financially independent. The issue of sexual harassment at workplace has come to haunt women with a growing number of women seeking economic independence. Sexual harassment is a form of gender discrimination. Gender biased socialisation and social control at the family and societal level is the root of sexual harassment of women. In Indian context, the Sexual Harassment of women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 is the most recent legal development in the field of law for providing women at the safe working environment. After almost a period of 16 years, it came in the limelight through the landmark of Vishaka Judgement which acknowledged the enormity of sexual harassment of the working women at the workplaces and laid down guidelines making it mandatory for employers to prevent the acts of sexual harassment. The object of this research paper is to analyze the provisions of the Act in pointing out the extent of harassment of women in their workplace and in finding the lacunas to suggest remedies for strong implementation of the Act.
