Assistant Professor,
On 1 November 1966, Haryana was carved out on the basis of that the parts of Punjab which were to be Haryana's "Hindi-speaking areas" on the recommendation of the Sardar Hukam Singh Parliamentary Committee. On the recommendation of this Committee, the Indian government set up the Shah Commission on 23 April 1966 under the chairmanship of Justice J. C. Shah, to divide and set up the boundaries of Punjab and Haryana. The commission gave its report on 31 May 1966 and Haryana came into existence on 1 November 1966. Haryana's Contribution to the Fight for Indian Independence is remarkable. 1st spark of revolt against the British rule started on 10th May, 1857 at Ambala. Haryana played a very important role in social awakening and rise of nationalist thought. The economic growth of Haryana has been exemplary since its creation in 1966 with an average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent during the period from 1966–67 to 2004–05. Haryana being the only state that has given the country at least one Olympic medalist in the past three Olympics has set a successful model for other states.
