Abstract

The present paper “Erasing The long silence and reality in Shashi Deshpande's That Long Silence” aims at studying the novel by applying some of the themes and motives of existentialism. The present novel “That Long Silence” presents the brief note on the theories of existentialism in various contexts with reference to Indian society and literature. Existentialism, which can be defined as the philosophy of man with his entire struggle to live and to know the meaning of his life, is one of the critical theories, but Deshpande has portrayed a new and different shade of the theory and practical. The well-known existentialist thinkers Karl Jaaspers, Gabriel Marcel, Martin Heideggar and Jean Paul Satre have been considered as Touchstone when applying this theory. Jean Paul Satre is considered as the pioneer of existentialism.
