Education for Sustainable Development: An Overview

This was the topic of discussion for the role of Education in Sustainable development in India and all over the world It includes the discussion how under the veil of development the environment is being exploited at rigorous rate and has reached its zenith. This exploitation includes deforestation, loss of biodiversity, ozone hole, global warming etc. These environmental problems are being faced everywhere in the world today. Where did they come from? This paper has tried to find out the possible causes of this devastation and also how to come out of it. Overuse of environmental resources causes environmental degradation. The long term final result of environmental degradation may cause unsustainability of human population. Education is an essential fundamental tool for achieving sustainability. Public awareness, education and training are essential to move society toward sustainability. In this paper the basic and fundamental principles of Sustainable development has also been discussed in detail, in order to comprehend the concept. Education directly affects sustainability plans through implementation, decision making and quality of life. Education for sustainable development aims at building up ones knowledge, skills, attitudes and values towards sustainable development through Knowledge building, skill development and development of values. Thus this paper focused on the concept of Sustainable Development, its need and principles and what role does education play for the Sustainable Development.
