Abstract

Theme of love figures most prominently in almost all the literary genres in all languages. In poetry, particularly lyrical poetry, it acquires greater veracity and significance as it is the genuine expression of the poet's profound emotions. Though there are many male poets who have written fine love poetry, some women are simply matchless in this regard. Toru Dutt is one of them. She is out and out Indian in her attitude love which is inescapably ideal as it is founded on the time-honored legends of Savitri, Sita, Uma, Dhruva narrated in great Indian works. ‘Savitri ’is a narrative poem giving an account of the life of legendary princess Savitri.
