Indian Music in the Court of Princely State of Kapurthala

Abstract

After the treaty of Amritsar, all eastern states of Punjab became the part of British Empire. And all the major powers were snatched from them. After that Rajas and Maharajas of these states started to live aristocratic lives. This style of life was main reason to patronize the Music and other forms of Arts. Out of them, Music became important part of princely state of Kapurthala. During this time, several well established artists gave their performance in the court of Kapurthala. Four schools of Indian music (Gharana) and musical festivals get patronage of royal court of Kapurthala. Therefore, the contribution of Princely state of Kapurthala to Indian Music is incredible.
