The study try to analyse that why the rice production and productivity has been become unsustainable in Himachal Pradesh for last three decades. The whole study period was from 1990–91 to 2019–20., which was further divided into two sub study periods, where the first sub period was started from 1990–91 to 2004–05 and the second period was from 2004–05 to 2019–20. Whole the study period was 30 years and two sub-study periods was 15 years each. It was revails from the study that adverse trend in state area and production for rice was emerged during the overall study period. It was due to the diversion of area from these crops to more remunerative crops which showed a fairly high growth rates in area during the first and second period. The performance of Himachal Pradesh's agriculture revealed that it was a downward movement in yield growth in majority of crops, which was instrumental in inducting the transition toward unsustainable growth path. From the policy perspective, it is more important to understand the further that lead to the process of unsustainable agricultural development. These factors operate at different levels viz. growth, stability, efficiency and equity.
