A study was conducted in the Anthikkad block of the Kole lands of Kerala to estimate the technical efficiency in rice production and to asses the pesticide use behaviour of farmers. The farm specific technical efficiencies ranged from 0.49 to 0.92, with a mean of 0.79. Absence of proper scientific knowledge emerged as one of the determinants of technical inefficiency and over use of pesticides in Kole lands.
