The performance of Rajapur Co-operative Phal Prakriya Kharedi-Vikri Sanstha Ltd., Kodavali, Rajapur, District Ratnagiri, has been studied by selecting 15 mango-growers randomly from the Rajapur and Harnai villages in district Ratnagiri. The in-depth information have been collected from them with 2002–03 as the reference period. On an average, the area per farm under mango crop has been found as 1.30 ha with average mango production per farm as 2.92 tonnes (2.25 t/ha). The three largely grown mango varieties are Alphonso, Kesar and Ratna. More than half of the produce has been found to be sold through co-operatives, indicating the important role played by them in marketing of mangoes. The total output of the unit valued in money terms has been found as Rs 9.05 lakhs, in which cost on raw materials has been the most important component, accounting for 86.22 per cent of the total cost. The unit had incurred 4.47 per cent of total costs on wages and salaries, followed by transport (3.11%). The total sale proceeds of the unit were Rs 8.15 lakhs for the year 2002–03. The total cost of production for producing products worth Rs 9.05 lakhs amounted to Rs 7.34 lakhs, generating a profit of Rs 0.81 lakh.
The capacity utilization of the unit has been found as 60 per cent, due to factors like lack of timely and adequate supply of raw materials, poor marketing, high cost of production, lack of diversification of industries, and irregular supply of power, etc. In marketing, the major constraint has been the low price that the farmers get in the local market for their produce.
