Abstract

This study has been conducted at the Keerapalayam block of Tamil Nadu with the objectives of indentifying the reasons, remittances and social overtunes for migration. The Garrett ranking has revealed that ‘failing agriculture’ is the man reason for migration, followed by ‘unfavourable employment conditions’, ‘schocks such as death, divorce, etc.’, higher wage rates’ and ‘social reasons’. The results of linear regression analysis have shown that family-size has a positive influence on migration. Dependency ratio and asset position have been found to influence the migration negatively. The study on remittances by the migrants has shown that, on an average, migrants earn an additional sum of Rs 12,000/= per year per migrant, though they live under difficult conditions for this additional saving. On the social front, the migrants feel isolated and suffer from tension, by and large. On the other hand, their communication skills and responsibilitysharing capacity have been found to be improved.
